Hey Reader,

Last week’s call ended up being mostly about why your own marketing always gets pushed aside for client work. Here’s the useful part in case you don’t watch the replay.

One of the members doesn’t come to the calls, she just emails me a status update every week. Back in April I pointed out that she was doing a huge amount of networking and almost nothing to talk about her own work publicly. So she picked a day and gave it up entirely. Wednesday is now content day. She plans everything one Wednesday and publishes it the next. The rest of the week she’s doing client work as usual, but on Wednesday she doesn’t design, code or ship anything.

Two things came out of it. Wednesday is consistently her highest traffic day, and she’s actually getting more client work done than before, even though she cut a day out of the week to do this.

The reason it works is that you’re not really losing a day. You were already losing more than that in small pieces across the whole week by switching between being the person who does the work and the person who promotes it.

I’m not a good example of this myself. Last week I should have sent around 40 outreach emails and I sent 3, because I’ve been buried in a client build. Knowing the answer doesn’t automatically fix it.

A few other things that came up on the call:

  1. What do you do with the data a quiz collects so the follow-up email isn’t generic?
  2. How do you quote work you’re going to subcontract without gutting your margin?
  3. Why is it so much easier to market someone else’s business than your own?

This is what the Friday calls are. Practical, collaborative, no bells and whistles. We're getting on one again shortly today if you'd like to join.

If you can't make it, every session gets recorded and added to a private library that's chapter-marked and summarized, so you can find the bit that matches whatever you're stuck on. Sometimes you just need someone outside the jar to read the label for you.
