Quick story

That time I refused to build with any tool but WordPress 😅

Hey Reader,

Quick story. Ever felt like you're hitting a ceiling in your web design business?

When I started my full-time web design business back in the olden days of 2012, I was hand-coding my client websites with HTML & CSS, mainly because that was the only way I knew how.

That worked fine until I realized there were three big problems:

  1. I couldn’t make a lot of money (charging $500 per website)
  2. I couldn’t take on bigger projects (I built websites only one way)
  3. I couldn’t take on more work (I was at full capacity)

Simply put, I hit a growth ceiling. And that growth ceiling kept me back from making more money, taking on bigger projects, and accepting more client work.

You see, I was getting requests for bigger projects that I just didn’t know how to fulfill. Clients wanted to update content themselves, have it look great across all screen sizes, publish blog posts, and have custom functionality like password-protected member areas.

I was in over my head, but I knew that if I could accept these bigger projects, I’d break through that growth ceiling and make more money (which I desperately needed).

So I learned WordPress. Y’heard of it?

And that was great! So much so, that I committed to ONLY building WordPress websites. I became a “platform purist” and declared that WordPress was the only way, and no other tool, platform, or website-building method was worthy.

I’d ruthlessly turn away referral work that wasn’t WP. And stick my nose up at clients who dared to ask if I build websites using different platforms.

(How dare they?)

Well…

That approach didn’t work out so well, for 3 very specific reasons. I’ll tell you about it in my next email.

But before I go, have you experienced a growth ceiling in your web design business? Maybe you’re struggling to meet diverse client needs, facing limitations with your current platform, or missing out on opportunities?

Hit reply & let me know.

Brad

P.S. Keep an eye out for my email tomorrow, where I’ll tell you why my “WordPress-or-Bust” approach was, well, a bust.
